Pterygium / Pinguecula
A pterygium and a pinguecula are common growths that can appear on the surface of the eye, often caused by chronic irritation from long-term exposure to sunlight, wind, or dust. A pinguecula looks like a small, yellowish bump on the white part of the eye, while a pterygium can grow further onto the clear part of the eye and may cause redness, irritation, or blurry vision.
These growths are usually harmless, but we monitor them during your exam and can provide treatments to reduce discomfort.
If a pterygium begins to affect your vision or continues to grow, surgery may be recommended to remove it.
